A public-use airport, White Mountain Airport is state-owned and serves the city of White Mountain in the Nome Census Area of the US state of Alaska. The airport is situated one nautical mile or 1.85 kilometres north of the central business district of White Mountain. It has an elevation of 267 feet or 81 metres above mean sea level, and encompasses 82 acres or 33 hectares. It has a single gravel paved runway designated 15/33, measuring 3,000 feet x 60 feet or 914 metres x 18 metres.

 

The city of White Mountain in the Nome Census Area in Alaska, United States is the only village on the Seward Peninsula that is inland and not on the ocean. The area was first an Eskimo fish camp, the Nachirvik (meaning ‘mountain look-up point’); then the community expanded with the arrival of white prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush. An old structure that is still standing here is a Russian Orthodox Church, built around 1920. White Mountain is currently most known as the last of three mandatory rest stops for teams competing in the yearly Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, where mushers are required to take an eight-hour rest stop at White Mountain before going on to the end of the race, 159 kilometres away in Nome. Aside from the famous Iditarod Trail, another White Mountain prominent attraction is the Robert ‘Putto’ Charles Valentine’s Basketball Tournament, which is attended by people from the surrounding villages. During the summer months, hunting and fishing is a popular activity; while gathering greens and berries, and dry fishing is popular during the winter months. Staple food in the city include fish, especially salmon; caribou, reindeer, seal, and moose. When in White Mountain, those staying here should be aware that selling alcohol is illegal, but you may bring it in or import it only for personal use.

White Mountain Airport is the airport that serves the city of White Mountain located along the eastern bank of the Fish River. The airport is served by Bering Air with flights from Elim, Golovin, Koyuk, Nome, Shaktoolik, and Unalakleet; and Era Alaska with flights from Nome and Unalakleet. The city can also be reached via the access trail from Golovin and via boat during the summer from Council or through Golovin Bay. During the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, people also get to White Mountain on dog sled.
