Discover Tununak

The Tununak Airport is a state-owned civilian airport located some two kilometres southwest of the central business district of Tununak, a town in the Bethel Census Area of Alaska. It is registered as a general aviation facility by the country's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems in 2009-2013, and has since recorded a steady enplanement rate of 1,800-2,000 each year. The airport has a single gravel runway measuring 1,778 feet, and is assigned the TNK code by the IATA and the 4KA code by the FAA. Currently, the airport's runway is poorly maintained, although the facility is still being used by two airlines, Ravn Alaska and Yute Air Alaska. This is due to the fact that flying is almost the same as riding a train in Europe or a cab in New York – a necessity.

From the airport, travellers may fly to Newtok; while from Nightmute and Toksook Bay, travellers may arrive to the airport. All flights are scheduled by nature, although almost all these flights are seasonal and are set when the weather in Alaska allows people to fly.

What to see & do
From Tununak and Bethel Census Area where the Tununak Airport is located, travellers may enjoy various activities and sights. Tununak is one of the 18 census-designated places in Bethel Census Area, and is one of the smallest communes sitting in the southwestern coast of the state. In 2010, Tununak has 327 inhabitants in less than a hundred households, with a population density of 5.4 square mile. Tununak's people are highly active, with many subsistence activities such as seal hunting, bird hunting, and fishing almost all year round. Travellers will delight with its relaxed and laidback atmosphere – a countryside destination that is cool in the summers and downright cold during winters. There is not much to do but enjoy the night sun, and lay back and just while away time.

Outside Tununak, however, travellers may enjoy water activities and other sports, as well as trekking and hiking in many Alaskan destinations. Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan top the list, as well as Kenai, Haines, Sitka, and Seward. Even simple sightseeing of nature's beauty is a must here – as the state is highly gifted with various resources not found in other areas of the United States.
When travelling to Alaska though, make sure to know where to catch flights, or how to travel around.

How to get around within Tununak
As said, the main mode of transport in Alaska and its parts is through flying, especially those who are transferring from one city or census area to another.
