As a United States Air Force base south of Tacoma, Washington, McChord Field, or McChord AFB, is the home of the 62d Airlift Wing, Air Mobility Command, the field's primary mission being worldwide strategic airlift. Located northwest of the United States within Pierce County in Washington, McChord Field along with its facilities have been consolidated with the U.S. Army’s Fort Lewis in 2010, and has since then become a part of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord complex. The air force base features a combination asphalt and concrete runway at an estimated 3,000 metres or 10,100 feet, in addition to an asphalt runway at 900 metres or 3,000 feet in length.

The Pierce Transit, which serves as the public bus service provider of Tacoma and Pierce County operates 43 bus routes in total, with bus services operated at 30 to 60 minute intervals, with heavily ridden ‘trunk’ routes mostly served every 20 minutes on weekdays, or 30 minutes to an hour on weekends. Additionally, Tacoma also relies on Sound Transit, which provides Sounder Commuter Rail service every day, along with bus services to and from Seattle, Washington. Sound Transit also has the Tacoma Link light rail, a free electric streetcar link that links Tacoma Dome Station with destinations such as the University of Washington, Tacoma, Tacoma’s Museum District, and the Theater District. Tacoma also relies on the Washington State Ferries system which has a dock by Point Defiance, and provides ferry access to Tahlequah, on the MV Rhododendron. Among other transportation services in Tacoma include an intercity bus service, Greyhound, and the national passenger rail system, Amtrak.
