Discover Fayetteville Pope AFB

Part of the Air Mobility Command of the United States Army, the Pope Field is a U.S. Military facility located 12 miles north-west of the central business district of Fayetteville, a commune in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Formerly known as the Pope Air Force Base (AFB), the facility continues to serve the needs of the United States Air Force, albeit now it is a part of the Fort Bragg under the operations of the United States Army. Pope Field uses the IATA code POB, and uses the ICAO identifier KPOB. It has two runways, one with a PEM surface that measures 7,501 feet, and another with an asphalt surface measuring 3,000 feet. In its long history (the facility opened in 1919), it never catered to commercial and civilian flights.

Where to go

Travellers who are looking for domestic flights to various destinations within the United States are in tough luck since the Pope Field is not a commercial or a civilian airport. Its sole purpose is to serve the United States Air Force and the United States Army, along with their operations. Travellers are better off looking for flights in the nearby domestic airports, including the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. For airports with focus on domestic flights, travellers may try and use the Piedmont Triad International Airport, the Albert J. Ellis Airport, the Fayetteville Regional Airport, and the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport.

Similarly, there are no short-haul flights from the Pope Field, mainly because of the same reason as stated above. The Pope Field, which was now incorporated to Fort Bragg under the United States Army, does not serve commercial flight-types. For international short-haul flights, travellers may head straight to the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. The Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is a joint civil-military public international airport located in Charlotte established in 1935. It is the busiest airport in the state, with over 44 million enplanements in 2014. Travellers may take advantage of the extensive regional flight network from here, which reaches as far as the Caribbean.

Like short-haul and domestic flights, there are no available services from the Pope Field. Travellers may, however, peruse the other airports in the state to search for flights and travel to long-haul destinations. US Airways, as operated by American Airlines, provides flights to select European and African destinations from the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. American Airlines also operate a few Europe-bound flights from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

How to get out

The Pope Field might not be able to bring travellers to any destination, but the nearby civilian airports can surely do the job. Check flights from the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and even from the Piedmont Triad International Airport for more flights. If in case the desired destination is not covered from these airports, travellers may head further out of North Carolina and travel to other major airports in the United States. New York, Miami, Dallas, and Houston all have major airports that serve a great number of flights.
