What to see & do

Nightmute is known as the setting for the movie Insomnia, starring Al Pacino. But the one chance most people have of actually seeing Nightmute (short of actually going there via Nightmute Airport) is a hoax, as the movie was filmed not in Nightmute, but in Squamish British Columbia, Canada. There is no tourism in Nightmute, but there are plenty of places to visit and see in the surrounding areas, such as the following:

Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge - Alaska Maritime or AMNWR is a United States National Wildlife Refuge that encompasses at total area of 20,000 km2, of which 10,700 km2 is wilderness. The refuge stretches from Cape Lisburne on the Chukchi Sea to Forrester Island in the east and the Aleutian Islands in the west, comprising of 2,400 islands, headlands, islets, rocks, spires, and reefs in the state of Alaska. It is best known for its abundance of seabirds, as about 75% of Alaskan native marine birds are present in the refuge at some point. That's about 15 to 30 million individual representatives of 55 species! The refuge provides a nesting habitat for millions of seabirds, with specialized nesting sites for each species (such as pinnacle, burrow, rock ledge, or crevice). Other animals living in AMNWR include whales, sea otters, sea lions, seals, and walrus.

Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge - Another very impressive national wildlife refuge of the United States nearby is Bethen's Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. It occupies 77,500 km2 in southwestern Alaska, making it the second-largest National Wildlife Refuge in the country. Activities that tourists come to the refuge for include fishing for all five North American species of Pacific salmon, grayling, rainbow trout, and other species anglers dream of catching. Hunting is also allowed, following state and federal regulations. Of course, observation and photography is the best way to take home some memories and proof that one actually came to Alaskan wilderness without actually having to take any of it home.
