What can you do in Lahore?
Lahore is one of the most populous cities in the world, and is considered to be the cultural heart of the rich and varied civilisation of Pakistan.
With a mixed legacy of the Mughal rulers of old, to the British Raj, and the thriving contemporary soul that is driving force now, Lahore is a fascinating city. Start with the old city, where you can see Mughal architecture in all its glory, the masterminds behind such buildings as the Taj Mahal in India. Step into Shahi Qila, a Royal Fort and UNESCO World Heritage site, where semi-precious jewels line the exquisite walls and ceilings of the Mirror Palace (Sheesh Mahal).
Stroll the impressive grounds at Emperor Jahangir’s Mausoleum, or wander around the gorgeous terraced pleasure gardens of Emperor Shah Jahan: Shalimar Garden. Or stand beneath the city’s iconic landmark minaret which has spiked above the city since the 1960s to commemorate the resolution that went on to cement Pakistan as a sovereign state.
However, you’d be doing yourself an injustice if you came to this city and didn’t indulge in one of its most celebrated arts: its cuisine. Spend an afternoon or an entire evening exploring the aptly named Food Street in Gawalmandi. You will find a plethora of restaurants and small eateries offering the best of Lahori cuisine.
When should you go?
Lahore is pretty warm for most of the year, but between June and September it is inundated with rain, and the humidity and temperatures soar. The shoulder seasons though (being March, April and October) tend to range between 20-30°C, with dry and sunny days for the most part. If you go between November and February, it’ll be even cooler and many people prefer coming at this time, expect temperatures in the late teens.
