Qasigiannguit Heliport serves the eastern part of Qasigiannguit town, formerly called as Christianshåb. It is located on the south-eastern shore of Disko Bay and considered as the thirteenth-largest town in Greenland and is home to 1,171 inhabitants as of 2013. Greenland in turn, is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark that is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. Interestingly, it is physiographically part of the North American continent, but it is politically and culturally associated with Europe, most particularly with Norway and Denmark. The town’s main industry thrives on shrimp and halibut fishing. Despite the town’s humble status, Qasigiannguit is notable for housing the oldest museum in Greenland. In addition, the famous midnight sun can be experienced approximately between May 27 and July 18. If that doesn’t suit you, you can opt to sail between Qasigiannguit and Ilulissat and remark at the icebergs floating near the Atlantic.

What to see & do

In Greenland, you should not miss to visit the Qasigiannguit Musuem, which is housed in Greenland’s oldest wooden house that dates back to 1734. The museum is home to several artefacts that can be traced back to thousands of years to Greenlanders from generations ago. Interestingly, it also boasts of artefacts from the advanced Saqqaq culture up to the present Inuit culture. Notable items that can be found in the Qasigiannguit Musuem include preserved items from excavations in Qeqertasussuk, which depicted life in Greenland’s earliest Stone Age culture. Other excavated artefacts also seemingly show that life during that period was more advanced, as findings include large collection of tools and northernmost discovery of the now extinct great auk. Furthermore, other natural historical displays and exhibits of hunters’ clothing are also featured in the museum.

All year round, it is recommended to take a walk to the east of the town, go a little further past the Qasigiannguit Museum, the heliport, tread past the cemetery, and continue walking until you reached the lake. The walk is recommended for you will be rewarded with unspoiled natural sights that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. The lake is also completely frozen during winter. You can also opt to take a hike, as Qasigiannguit is ideal for hiking. There are hikes for as long as 30km, but there are also shorter hikes good for one day.
