Tuticorin Airport is located in Vagaikulam some 17km from the Tuticorin city centre. It is a small domestic airport which can handle a maximum of 75 passengers at a time and a landing space for one aircraft at a single time. It serves the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli in southern Tamil Nadu, and it is owned and operated by the Civil Government of Tamil Nadu.

The airport is approximately elevated at 129 feet, with an asphalt runway measuring 4,434 feet. A master plan for upgrading the Tuticorin Airport is underway, with the preparations being handled by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Tamil Nadu Government. The local government was asked to provide some 586 acres of land free without encumbrances to the Airports Authority of India to add to the 110 acres of land that has been set aside by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Coast guard for the development of the airport.

Currently, services offered in the Tuticorin Airport are the basic departure and arrival of passengers, checked-in baggage handling (manual), security checks, and other terminal services. No other services such as retail shops, duty free shops, and merchandising are available.

What to see and do

Tuticorin Airport is found at the city of Tuticorin, which is located in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, located almost 580km from Chennai. It is one of the more popular cities in India – owing to the fact that it is well-connected through air routes and land routes to all major cities in India. This makes the city quite a destination – especially for pilgrims who are looking for good churches or worship places to visit. Mosques, churches, cathedrals, and temples are aplenty here, so travellers will not lack places to visit. In lieu of the churches and places of worship, festivals form a part of the culture in Tuticorin, and usually, these celebrations are connected to the religions prevailing in the city. Some of the more prominent festivals are the Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica festival, Soorasamharam, Brahmothsavam, Vasanthothsavan, Visaka Visakam, and Skandha Sashti. Meanwhile, the Aavanipperunthirunaal and Maasipperunthirunaal are both grand celebrations held twice a year. Other attractions in the city include the original Tamil Nadu-Tuticorin cuisine and other Indian fusion foods.
