Discover Harare

The country’s primary aviation hub is the Harare International Airport (HRE) and sees the most action in terms of international air traffic. This is a mid-size airport, sitting at a distance of 15km from the city centre. There is access to WiFi, banks, bureau de change services, medical services, restaurants, bars, a duty-free area, a post office, and a pharmacy.

The only real way to get into the city centre is to take a taxi, or organise an airport transfer ahead of time. A taxi is usually a fixed price of 25USD/9000ZWD ($35) for a trip to downtown.

Within the city, you will find vaunted museums and galleries, a great dining scene, and plenty in the way of nightlife. Outside of the city you will find the woodlands, and plains of the Zimbabwean wilderness where you can embark on a safari trip of a lifetime.

Things to do in Harare

One of the best ways to get to know the city, and the country is to tour its excellent arts and culture museums. Begin with the Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences, which looks at the life and past of this region, then the delightful National Gallery, the Chapungu Sculpture Park, and the National Heroes’ Acre, which also has a museum spotlighting Zimbabwe’s fight for independence. Couple this with the Africa Unity Square, which was renamed after the country won its right to govern itself.

Find time for the Doon Estate and Chapungu Village, which is home to the aforementioned sculpture park, as this is a wonderful place to shop for local crafts, and some unique Zimbabwean wares.

Then enjoy the many outdoor features of this city, such as the lovely Wild Is Life Grand Zimbabwe, a wildlife sanctuary for some of the indigenous animals of the region. You can see baby elephants up close, as well as lean cheetahs, and towering giraffes roam the property.

On a sunny day, stroll the National Botanic Gardens, one of the beauties of the city, or head a little outside of the city and amble in the Mukuvisi Woodlands, where you can encounter on guided tours, zebra, impalas, and even crocodiles. Of pack a picnic, and drive to the Raintree Venue, where you can sit by a rushing river, and escape the sounds of the city.

Best time to visit Harare

·         Harare will always be fairly warm, with temperatures even in mid-winter reaching daily averages of 22°C. However, the best time to go is between April and October, when the dry season is in full swing, and you can still strike out to the gorgeous national parks of the country.

Arriving in Harare by plane

·         Hopping aboard a flight to Harare will almost certainly mean a stop in South Africa’s Johannesburg (JNB), and a possible layover in Perth (PER) if you are flying from the east coast.
