How to get around within Guatemala

Guatemala City is divided into 21 zones. The most notable ones are Zona 1, the old historic centre, Zona 4, which contains many of the official buildings; Zona 10, which contains majority of the upscale hotels; restaurants; and shopping facilities.

The most common method of getting around is by taxi or by bus. Several kinds of buses are available, like the Transmetro, Trans urbano, and regular Red city buses. There are different types of taxis too: the ones with a metre, and the ones that don't. For the latter, you will need to negotiate with the driver and agree on a price before starting your journey. Riding taxis without metres is only recommended if you have ridden to and from the same locations on a metred taxi before and have a general idea of how much the trip would normally cost. Metered taxis are yellow, and they cannot be hailed off the street. You will need to call 1766 for their services. The unmetered taxis are white.
