Ghat is the capital of the Ghat District in the Fezzan region of south-western Libya. The history of Ghat states that from the fifth century BC to the fifth century AD, the Fezzan region was home to the Garamantian Empire, which is a city state that operated the Trans-Saharan trade routes between the Carthaginians—and later the Roman Empire—and the Sahelian states of West and Central Africa. In the 13th and 14th century, parts of the Fezzan region were part of the Kanem Empire, while the Ottoman rulers of North Africa asserted their control over the region in the 17th century.

Ghat has a hot desert climate, which is typical of the Fezzan region because it lies in the heart of the Sahara Desert. The highest average temperatures exceeds 40°C during summer for three months in June, July, and August and average high temperatures are usually above 20°C during the coldest month of the year. Winter days are still very warm, sunny, and dry. The annual precipitation averages only 0.32in which makes the location one of the driest places on Earth.
