The Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE), also called the Ezeiza Airport, is the largest international aviation facility in the country, and welcomes almost all of the long-haul flights from places like Australia into the country. You’ll find that this airport is well equipped for passengers’ needs, with access free WiFi, ATMs, restaurants, shops, and a few bureaux de change counters.

The airport is also an easy distance from the city centre, set at 22km from the downtown area, and can be reached by buses, shuttles, and taxis. The latter option is one of the most convenient ways into the city, but it is advised that you pre-book your journey within the airport, otherwise expect to haggle. The drive should take around 45 minutes.  

Qatar Airways, British Airways, American Airlines, Air Canada, Delta, LATAM Airlines Group, Emirates, and Air New Zealand operate flights between Australia and Buenos Aires.

It is impossible to step onto the avenues, squares, and laneways of Buenos Aires without wanting to get to know every facet of its charming personality.

Things to do in Buenos Aires

Spend some time in this fantastic city exploring its colonial heart. Wander through the Plaza de Mayo, and past the Presidential Palace, where the former first lady Evita once stood on the pale pink balcony welcoming her adoring crowd. There are several buildings in this area of note, and worth a look in, such as the Cabildo, and its accompanying museum that investigates the city’s history. If you have time, you should also make a side trip to the Metropolitan Cathedral, built in the Palladian style and one of the finest buildings in the city.

Nearby this central point, you can find most of Buenos Aires’ cultural attractions too, with the Colon Theatre, and the famous Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires (also called MALBA) just north of the plaza.

For a little culture outside of museums, head on down to the lively La Boca district, where you can see tango dancers take to the street, pick up local crafts, and enjoy some of the restaurants in this happening district.

Then for some time to contemplate the city, and find a little slice of quiet, go to the lush Botanical Gardens, one of the loveliest parts of this city, and a favourite haunt for many locals on a sunny day.

Best time to visit Buenos Aires

·         The autumn months, which fall between the April and July, are beautiful temperature-wise. You can expect the days to hover between 10 and 16°C.

·         The spring is also ideal, from October to December highs sit between 23-28°C, and the prices haven’t reached the zenith that they do in summer.

Arriving in Buenos Aires

·         You won’t find any non-stop flights from Australia to Buenos Aires, but you can get to this city with only one layover, especially if you leave from a major hub like Melbourne (MEL) or Sydney (SYD). The stopover is usually directed via Santiago (SCL) or Auckland (AKL).

·         Whilst you will not need a visa if you travel to Argentina and hold an Australian passport, you will be subject to a reciprocity fee.
