Emilia-Romagna is an administrative region of northern Italy. As the name suggests, it comprises of the two historical regions of Emilia and Romagna. The region covers an area of 22,446 square kilometres and has a population of about 4.4 million. It is considered to be one of the wealthiest and most developed regions in all of Europe. In fact, the capital Bologna is known to have the highest quality of life indices in Italy, in addition to advanced social services.


What to see & do

Towers of Bologna – The Towers of Bologna is a group of medieval buildings that were possibly as many as 180 between the 12th and the 13th centuries. The purpose of the towers is unclear, and several of the towers were demolished or collapsed. Today, less than twenty towers remain standing. The most notable ones are two leaning towers Asinelli Tower and Garisenda Tower, collectively called the Two Towers. 


Mirabilandia – Mirabilandia is an amusement park in a frazione of Ravenna. It covers a total area of 40 hectares, with 10 hectares being the additional waterworld area called Mirabilandia beach. The amusement park features the world’s tallest watercoaster called the Divertical (60 m) and the second tallest Ferris wheel in Europe called Eurowheel (90 m). Other notable attractions are an inverted roller coaster and the iSpeed launched coaster. 


Palazzo dei Diamanti – One of the most famous palaces in Italy is the Palazzo dei Diamanti in the city and commune of Ferrara. It is also noted as one of the most influential representations of European Renaissance architecture. The palace was built between 1493 and 1503, with its most prominent feature being the 8,500 white-and-pink marble blocks of the exterior that were carved to resemble diamonds. On the main floor is the National Art Gallery of Ferrara, housing paintings from

the Ferrara school from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. On the lower floor is the Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary art. 


International Museum and Library of Music of Bologna – Located in the Palazzo Aldini Sanguinetti in Bologna is a music museum and library that houses the city’s collection of musical objects. Its purpose is to raise public awareness of the rich musical heritage of the city.


How to get around within Emilia-Romagna

Emilia-Romagna is easily navigable. Renting a car can allow you the freedom of travelling to even the areas that aren’t often visited by tourists. If driving is out of the question, bus service from most of the major cities such as Bologna and Parma can take travelers to the countryside. The ticket Mi Muovo Multibus makes it possible for the holder to take all of the busses in Emilia-Romagna. For short-distance trips, getting around by bike is a popular way to explore the cities.

The primary international airport is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, located 6 kilometres from the capital. It is served by several airlines such as Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, Meridiana, Lufthansa, KLM, Germanwings, EasyJet, and Ryanair, which connect Bologna to London, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Brussels, Prague, Berlin, Madrid, Istanbul, and other major cities in nearby countries. It is also possible to fly into the airport via the other smaller airports such as Parma Airport in Parma and Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini.
