El Golea Airport serves the town of El Golea, which is also in turn the capital of El Ménia District, in Ghardaïa Province, Algeria. The airport has two runways; both are furnished with asphalt surface. The first runway has a direction of 18/36 with a length of 3,000 metres or 9,843 feet, and the second runway has a direction of 10/28, with a length of 1,800 metres or 5,906 feet. El Golea Airport is approximately 2.3km away, west from El Golea town proper.

The city of El Golea can be found in the Saharan area of Algeria, consisting mostly of barren dessert and dotted with oases. It is located almost at the centre of Algeria, bordering the Grand Erg Occidental, also known as the Western Sand Sea on its eastern side at an elevation of 1,250 feet. In El Golea, you can visit the well-maintained Musée Communale, which is located just opposite of the Hotel el-Boustane. The Musée Communale is solely dedicated to the palaeontology and geology of the region, and houses an interesting collection of fossils, ancient pottery, stone tools, as well as written information on prehistory and mineralogy.

You should also not miss the impressive church in Bel Bachir, which can be found near the outskirts of El Golea. The sand-coloured façade of the church makes it glow beneath the noonday shade of the sun. The church is said to be the place where Charles de Foucauld, a French Catholic religious priest assassinated in 1916 is buried.

If you want to see an overview of the city from the north to the south, you can opt to climb the old ksar El Menia, which dates back to the 10th century built by the Berbers themselves. However, it is advisable to climb during the wee hours of the morning, as the high temperature of the area tends to burn off your skin and wears off your energy.

How to get around within El Golea

El Golea has good road connections from the N1 highway to Ghardaïa to the north down to the In Salah in the south. You can practically reach the city by car if you are coming from the aforementioned areas. However, for a hassle-free journey, it is best if you make pre-arrangements for car shuttle service prior to your arrival.
