Though this city is known for its contemporary architecture, it does not lack for heritage buildings. Like most cities in Germany, it has a lovely Old Town with a main square—the Marktplatz—where you can see 18th century buildings like the impressive Town Hall, the Castle Tower, and a couple of renowned museums, one of which focuses on maritime trade, and the other on ceramic art.

The modern architecture is best viewed at the harbour, and typified by the Neue Zollhof, a selection of buildings designed by Frank Gehry.
