The major city of Wuhan, and capital of the Hubei province is serviced by Wuhan Tiange International Airport (WUH). This is a fairly modern facility, having been first open for business in 1995. It is one of the busiest airports in central China and services flights throughout the country and other international destinations. You will find duty free shops, restaurants and access to the Internet in the commercial centre. 

Airlines that fly to Wuhan

Most of the airlines that fly to Wuhan are operated by Chinese companies, though many of these fly to major international hubs as well. These airlines include Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Korean Air.   

Getting into Wuhan

By taxi

There are taxis outside the airport but it is recommended that you ensure the meter is turned on, and that you have the destination name written in Chinese, as many drivers will not speak English.  

By public transportation

The public transportation options are extensive and excellent at WUH Airport. There are seven lines (1-7) that you can take to various parts of the city, the duration of which tends to be around 50-90 minutes. The costs are between 22-37CNY ($5-8) but do not go above that. Most of the buses operate these routes every 30 minutes, though please be aware that many do not run overnight services. 

By car

You can hire a car in China, though many of these come with a chauffeur package, which may be best if you are feeling a little nervous to drive in the big city. What can you do in Wuhan?

There are lots of brilliant things you can see and do in this city that range from natural sites, to historical attractions, cultural museums and galleries, and of course, wonderful gastronomic centres.  

The most famous of the historical attractions in the city is the Yellow Crane Tower. Built in 223 this amazing watchtower is a brilliant way to get a panoramic view of Wuhan. There is also the Guiyuan Buddhist Temple; situated in the west of the city, this Qing Dynasty temple is a fascinating insight into this ancient religion.

For history that has had a more recent impact, it is worth visiting Chairman Mao Zedong’s summer villa, where this controversial leader, and his closest followers, spent much of their time. To learn about the history of the province and gain further insight, you should step into the Hubei Provincial Museum, which charts much of the area’s ancient past. 

For those that like the outdoors, head to East Lake and walk along the banks of the river, explore the bamboo forest or the plum gardens. In this part of the city you can also see Mo Hill and the Qingchuan Pavilion.  

For food, drop by the Ji Qing Jie night street, which is famous for also having musicians perform in this area, and the Hu Bu Xiang Breakfast street where you can pick up traditional breakfast foods.  

When should you go?

The most ideal time to visit Wuhan tends to be in the shoulder seasons of March-April or September-October, when the weather is dry and warm and between 18-23°C. Summers (June-August) can rise to a stifling 40°C and experience the highest rainfall. Winters can be chilly, dropping to around 4-6°C.

Currency: The Chinese Yuan (CNY) 

Visa: You’ll discover that the majority of travellers to Wuhan will need a visa to enter the China. There are exceptions to the rule, especially when it comes to this particular city, as Wuhan can grant a 72 hour visa on arrival. Be aware though, that it is important to check your individual national requirements and contact your local embassy to double check any requirements.
