Why visit Casablanca?

Casablanca, made forever immortal by the 1942 Hollywood film, is a city that lives and thrives as Morocco’s contemporary powerhouse. Wheeling towards all things modern, travellers can still find the old heart of this city pop up in its gorgeous mosques and Mauresque style buildings that harken to another time. But Casablanca is for the young, so engage in the best of this dynamic city by indulging in its cuisine, seeing its art galleries, and dancing the night away in Casablanca’s bars and clubs.

Things to do in Casablanca

Most people travelling internationally will fly into Casablanca, but you must make sure you don’t skip it in favour of Morocco’s coastal resorts or storied medinas of older cities, as Casablanca has tons to offer. See the Hassan II Mosque, an intricately designed house of worship that also is home to the world’s highest minaret. This mosque dominates the city’s skyline, and is definitely worth a visit.

Then wander through Casablanca’s own medina, which is a jumble of twisting laneways that will take you past tiny shops, little restaurants, and curiosity boutiques. But if you really want to shop, go to the central market, where you can find freshly made slippers, beautiful fabrics, and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Then leave the cramped confines of the busy market for the open spaces of Place Mohamed V, the main square of the city, and see important government buildings that populate the plaza. Or head instead for the sea, where there are lots of hotels and restaurants, and a lovely stretch of golden beach where you can jump in the sea if you are in need of cooling down after a day of touring.
