Discover Cherepovets

Cherepovets Airport is a public airport serving the city of Cherepovets west of Vologda Oblast, Russia. The airport is located in Boto village, Cherepovetsky District, 18km north of the city. In the facility is the head office of Severstal Air Company. Cherepovets Airport resides at an elevation of 377 feet / 115 metres above mean sea level and has an asphalt runway designated 03/21 that is 8,277 feet / 2,523 metres long.

Cherepovets was founded in the 14th century as a monastery. Today it is the largest city in the Vologda Oblast, a region in Northwestern Russia. It is not the administrative capital of the region and there aren't many tourist attractions in the city itself, but Cherepovets serves as a good base from where tourists can access several of Vologda Oblast's attractions. Cherepovets also hosts OAO Severstal, a large Russian company operating in the steel and mining industry that dominates the entire city.

What to see & do

Cherepovets Resurrection Monastery - The Church of Resurrection is the oldest structure in the whole of Cherepovets, dating back to when it was completed between 1752 and 1756. It was founded by two Christian Orthodox monks called Feodosy and Afanasy, both of whom were followers of Sergius of Radonezh. The church was abolished in 1764, then was used as a warehouse and aircraft engine repair shop during the World War II. After the war, the Church of Resurrection resumed with its normal services in 1946.

Vereschagin House Museum - This is a small museum devoted to the local 19th century aristocrat and painter Vasilij Vereschagin, who is known for his landscape paintings and Eastern themes.

Sheksna River - Sheksna River is a river that encompasses the Belozersky, Kirillovsky, Sheksnisky, and Cherepovetsky Districts of Vologda Oblast. Though swimming is not advised, the beaches on Sheksna River are a good place for sunbathing during the summer. Guests can also take boat tours from Ulitsa Nabarezhnaja.

Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery - Accessible from Cherepovets although not in the city itself is the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, which loosely translates to St. Cyril of Beloozero's Monastery. Sometimes referred to as the Dormition Monastery of St. Cyril, it was once the largest monastery of Northern Russia. The monastery lies on the bank of Lake Siverskoye.
