Brasilia International Airport (BSB)

Brasilia International Airport (BSB) is a breeze to fly in or out of, conveniently located only 15km south of the city centre. Within the airport itself, passengers will find that the complex has plenty of modern facilities, including free WiFi, self-check-in kiosks, movie theatres, ATMs, shops and restaurants.

Airlines that fly to Brasilia

There are quite a few international airlines that fly to Brasilia from Australia, though you will find the majority will require connecting flights to this destination. Airline carriers include: Qantas, United, Virgin Australia, Delta, Air China, Emirates, and British Airways.

Within the country, there are a large number of South American carriers that fly to Brasilia. These include: Aerolineas Argentinas, Avianca Costa Rica, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Copa Airlines, Gol Airlines, and Passaredo Linhas Aereas.

Getting into Brasilia

By taxi

Getting to and from the airport is most easily done by taxi, as these are available 24 hours a day. The ride into town typically takes around 15 minutes, and will cost up to 60BRL (around $20).

By airport bus

The Executive Bus, Line 113, will take you to the town centre, and for less than a taxi with the typical fare costing 30BRL ($10). However, be warned, if you’re arriving in the city late, this service only runs until 23:00.

By public transport

There are city buses that run from the airport into the centre of town. Take Line 11 to the Esplanade, Line 102 to the Plano Piloto Bus Station and Line 31 to W3 North South.

By car

Brasilia is a city for cars, and for many, hiring a car is the easiest and most practical solution. Rental car companies include Alamo, Budget Car, Avis, Hertz and Thrifty, among others. It is recommended you book in advance if possible.

What can you do in Brasilia?

This contemporary metropolis is best explored by car, the big highways and the large scale of the city makes it difficult to get around via public transport, and getting behind the wheel in Brasilia will ensure that you get to see the best this city has to offer. Visit the official modernistic buildings of the Square of Three Powers, the Palácio dos Arcos, surrounded by gardens designed by landscape architect Burle Marx, or the Cathedral of Brasilia, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, this building is known for its unusual architecture, and incredible stained-glass walls.

There’s plenty to do outside of the city though, like visiting the Brasilia National Park, where the section open to the public has beautiful natural springs you can escape the city’s heat in. Or laze by Lake Paranoá, where you can wander by the lakeside shores and dip into the many restaurants and bars that line its sides.

Typically the weather is best between April and June, when the temperature averages around 25-28°C and is without the humidity and downpours that frequent the summer months (December to February).

Currency: Brazilian Real (BRL)

Visa: Most foreigners travelling to Brazil will need to apply for a visa before entering the country. You must apply to your nearest consulate to obtain a visa. More information can be found on the government website which outlines which foreign nationals are exempt from having to apply in advance of travel.
