Discover Baidoa

Baidoa Airport serves the capital city of Baidoa, located in the Bay region in Somalia. It has a runway direction of 04/22, with length of 3,000 metres, or 9,843 feet on an asphalt surface. Baidoa Airport sits on an elevation of 1,520 feet, or 463 metres above mean sea level. The city of Baidoa is included in the Southern region of Somalia, which is also sadly home to most of the fighting in the civil war. Travellers should avoid at all cost going to this part of the region, since it is regarded as the most dangerous region in the country as an Islamic terrorist group rules much of the region. A fairly safe and stable place to travel would be the de facto independent Somaliland in the north-western Somalia, which declared its independence in May 1991.

What to see & do

You can visit the capital and safest city in the region, which is Hargeisa. To get a feel of the local living, visit the Central Market. Interestingly, the expansive central market is a wonderful and hassle-free way to shop for good, local finds apart from a typical Somali market. Here, you can buy all kinds of local goods that range from perfumes to household objects, electronic goods and clothes. You can also help yourself to towering colourful fruits that are sure to satiate your hunger pangs. You should also not miss going to the livestock market, which is an essential part of travel to Hargeisa. Here, you can see hundreds of goats, sheep, and camels being brought here every day, which is in turn a fascinating sight to behold. Surprisingly, the area also offers picturesque views. Take heed that if you want to take a picture, you should ask for permission first so as not to be regarded as rude by the locals.

Located just east of the market area is a place of worship, the Jama Mosque, which hosts Hargeisa’s main Friday prayers during noontime and attracts hundreds of people. Visiting here is also another sight to behold; sadly, non-worshippers aren’t allowed to enter the mosque. Instead, delight yourself with the mosque’s white façade, domed roof and tall twin minarets, and take snapshots of the place. Again, just ask for permission before you decide to point and shoot.

One of the prominent landmarks in Hargeisa that is impossible to miss would be the MiG Jet memorial. The memorial serves as a tribute to the Somali Air Force MiG jet fighter that crashed during the aerial bombardment. The memorial is located on a stand easily identifiable with its colourful murals, which in turn depicts scenes from the civil war.

How to get around

To get around Hargeisa and nearby towns such as Burao, Berbera, and Borama, you can opt to take a bus. You can also take services that travel between major towns and adjacent villages operated by 4-wheel drives and light good vehicles. If however, you want to travel outside Hargeisa, it is advisable that you take an armed guard with you at all cost for safety and precautionary measures.

How to get there

Since Baidoa is not a safe place for travel, Baidoa Airport doesn’t have recent flight activity. Should you wish to go to Somalia, the safest place to go to is the Somaliland. If you want to reach Somaliland, you should fly into the Hargeisa Egal International Airport. The airport is being served by airlines such as African Express Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, and Jubba Airways (Kenya), which flies from destinations such as Bosaso, Nairobi, Mogadishu, Addis Ababa, Djibouti, and Mogadishu.
