Discover Ahe

Ahe Airport is a public airport located in Tenukupara village and serves the Ahe atoll in French Polynesia. Residing at an elevation of three metres or 11 feet above mean sea level, the airport can be found on the map with the coordinates 14°25′41″S, 146°15′25″W. It operates with an asphalt-surfaced runway, designated 06/24, measuring 1,240 metres or 4,068 feet long.

Ahe, also known as Ahemaru or Omaru, is an almost entirely-enclosed coral atoll in the northern Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia, approximately 14 kilometres to the west of Manihi. The atoll’s is characterised by a ring shape broken only by a single small passage into the lagoon. The only village in Ahe is Tenukupara.

What to see & do

Ahe is primarily known for the several pearl farms in its lagoon. Ahe Atoll belongs to the commune of Manihi, one of the northernmost of the Tuamotus, in the King George subgroup. It consists of the atolls of Manihi and Ahe. Manihi has an oval-shaped lagoon that extends 27 kilometres long and eight kilometres wide, and is surrounded by islets. The lagoon is popular for snorkelling, wherein it boasts of beautiful and diverse marine fauna which includes the manta ray. The lagoon can be accessed via the pass located close to Manihi’s southern end. Manihi atoll is also known as the original home of the highly prized Polynesian black pearls, as well as the Pearl Beach Manihi resort. An unobstructed view of the sunset can be best seen at the airstrip at Manihi Airport. During the night, an enjoyable activity here includes stargazing, as the atolls are not interfered by the city lights. On Wednesday nights, there is a free guided tour offered in Manihi. Pearl farm tours, scuba diving opportunities, and beach comb exploration can also be arranged.

How to get around within Ahe

Local transportation within Ahe mainly consists of bicycles and a few motorised vehicles. Resort guests can utilise the bicycles for free. Water taxis are also available, as well as an airport shuttle for resort guests.

How to get there

Ahe Airport only has flights to and from local destinations such as Rangiroa, Tahiti, and Takaroa in French Polynesia. These destinations can be reached with flights operated by Air Tahiti. On Manihi, there is the Manihi airport which receives flights from Fakarava, Rangiroa, Tahiti, and Tikehau via Air Tahiti. Travellers from international locations can get to French Polynesia via Fa'a'ā International Airport in Tahiti. The airport serves as a hub for Air Tahiti and Air Tahiti Nui, and Air France, Air New Zealand, Aircalin, Hawaiian Airlines, and LAN Airlines also operate here. The airport receives flights from Los Angeles, Paris, Auckland, Rarotonga, Tokyo, Noumea, Honolulu, Easter Island, and Santiago de Chile.
