Serving Araracuara in Colombia is Araracuara Airport, a regional airport situated at the convergence of the Yari and Caqueta rivers. The airport also serves various indigenous people settled along the banks of the Caqueta River, and allows access to the Chiribiquete National Natural Park. Residing at an elevation of 381 metres or 1,250 feet above mean sea level, Araracuara Airport serves with a single runway with a surface of land/stone carving, measuring 1,306 x 35 metres or 4,285 x 115 feet. The airport was built in the 1950s as a waypoint on the route between Bogota and Leticia.

Situated in the Amazonas region, Caqueta borders with the departments of Cauca and Huila to the west, Meta to the north, Guaviare to the northeast, Vaupes to the east, and Amazonas and Putumayo to the south. Caqueta is the third largest department in Colombia, and its capital is the city of Florencia.

What to see & do

Araracuara is home to the largest national park in Colombia, the Chiribiquete National Natural Park. It was established in 1989 and covers an area of 12,800 square kilometres or 4,900 square miles. The park includes the Serrania de Chiribiquete mountains and the surrounding lowlands covered by tropical moist forest, savannahs, and rivers. It is located at the western end of the Guyana biogeographic region, characterised by the physical boundaries of the Guyana Shield, which is among the oldest rock formations on Earth. The two main rivers of Mesay and Cuñare enter the heart of the Chiribiquete National Park; there are also waterfalls in the park that are 50 to 70 metres in altitude, falling from the top of the tepuys, forming water sources. In August 2013, Chiribiquete National Natural Park was expanded to three million hectares, from the previous 1.2 million hectares.

Also found within Araracuara is the Araracuara Canyon, which collects water from the slope of the upper and middle Caqueta. The site is known for its impressive scenery as well as its interesting history and culturally significant areas. The canyon is part of the remnants of the ancient formations of Guyana Shield.
