Wekweètì Airport is the airport serving the community of Wekweètì in Northwest Territories, Canada. The public airport is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories and resides at an elevation of 1,208 ft (368 m) above mean sea level. It has a runway designated 13/31, with a gravel surface at the length of 3,000 ft (914 m). 

Wekweètì, meaning 'rock lakes', is officially called the Tlicho Community Government of Wekweètì. The name of the community was spelled Wekweti prior to August 4, 2005, but was formerly known as Snare Lake up until November 1, 1998, which is why Wekweètì Airport is also known as Snare Lake. The nearest community is the Ekati Diamond Mine, located on the border with Nunavut.

 

The Nahanni National Park Reserve in Northwest Territories protects part of the Mackenzie Mountains Natural Region. It is located approximately 500 kilometres west of Yellowknife. Popular activities in the park are white-water canoeing, kayaking, and rafting trips, flight-seeing day trips, and hiking.

 

The park's most notable feature is the South Nahanni River, but the protected area also encompasses four canyons reaching 1,000 m (3,300 ft) in depth. The canyons are called the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Canyon. The national park is situated within three of the country's ecozones; to the west is the Taiga Cordillera, to the east are the Taiga Plains, and a small southern portion in the Boreal Cordillera. Ten species found within the park were listed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as of special concern, threatened, or endangered, including grizzly bears, woodland caribou, and wood buffalo. It is the only known nesting site of the Whooping crane.

 

The park was established in 1972 with an area of 4,766 square kilometres. The name Nahanni was derived from the indigenous Dene name for the area, Nahʔa Dehé, meaning 'river of the land of the Nahʔa people'. By 2009, the area of the park covered 30,050 square kilometres.

 

Due to limited public transportation, the best way to get around Wekweètì and anywhere else in the Northwest Territories is by car. It allows you unlimited freedom to explore, not constricted by time and routes. Wekweètì Airport is used by two airlines; Air Tindi and Arctic Sunwest Charters. The latter operates from Yellowknife Airport in the city of Yellowknife. Air Tindi also has flights from Yellowknife, but provides additional connections from Rae/Edzo Airport in the community of Behchoko, Gamètì/Rae Lakes Airport in Gamètì, and Whatì Airport in Whatì.
