Discover Blanc Sablon

The border between Quebec and Newfoundland makes a fascinating area to explore. One of the places to visit here is Blanc-Sablon, a community located in the easternmost part of Quebec. Its isolation and lack of a continuous road network to the regional centre makes it seem a world away from the cities in the capital. Those going here will find various features of natural beauty. Blanc-Sablon can be found on the north coast of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, with two significant bays marking its shores.

Another good thing about travelling here is the water transport available. Ferry services make it convenient to visit the coastal towns of Saint-Augustin, Gros-Mecatina, Tete-a-la-Baleine, Harrington Harbour, and other communities. This makes it easier to visit other towns, which would otherwise take longer to reach due to the long routes around the region.

What to see & do
Those going to the town of Blanc-Sablon will find it on a rocky point of land. Tourists climbing up to high vantage point here can look across the Strait of Belle Isle to the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland. One will also learn about the history of the aboriginal groups who first lived here thousands of years ago. Those eager to learn about this part of Quebec can check out the archaeology exhibit in the airport which displays old artefacts and explains the prehistory of the region. There is also the model of the Bremen monoplane to see, which shows a replica of the German Junkers monoplane that made a crash landing on Greenly Island in 1928. It was part of the first east-to-west transatlantic flight, which was a great milestone of the time.

From here, tourists can then visit the Monseigneur Scheffer Museum, which features the life and works of Monseigneur Scheffer who was mainly responsible for building the local hospital and church in the mid-20th century. Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Shrine is also a landmark to see. Carved in France, this wooden statue of the Madonna has a long history ever since it was erected up on the hill in 1916. After paying respects to the Madonna, one can then enjoy the panoramic view of the community and the surrounding area.

Travellers out to enjoy the outdoor sights of the province can check out Greenly Island, three kilometres south of Blanc-Sablon. It was once called 'Isle des Ouaiseaulx' or Island of Birds due to the flocks of Atlantic puffins and razor-billed auks found here. Those out to see more birds can then visit the nearby Brador Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary, which is home to one of the largest colonies of Atlantic puffins in Quebec. Others who want to enjoy the water, on the other hand, can then go down to L'Anse aux Dunes Beach, which offers a great view of Perroquet Island.

How to get around
Those going around the community will find public transport options available. Taxis are the most prominent choice, which can suit those transferring from one landmark to another. Travellers out to visit other towns and cities by the coast can book boating or ferry services. One can also choose to rent a car and check out the more isolated areas of the community.

How to get there
Travellers planning a visit to the community of Blanc-Sablon can schedule flights to Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon Airport. Airlines serving here include Air Labrador and Provincial Airlines, which take passengers between Chevery, Goose Bay, Kegaska, La Romaine, La Tabatiere, Natashquan, Saint-Augustin, Sept-Iles, St Anthony, St John's, and Tete-a-la-Baleine.
