What to see & do
Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park - Formerly called the Hluhluwe–Umfolozi Game Reserve, the park is proclaimed to be the oldest nature reserve in all of Africa. It covers an area of 960km2, 280km north of Durban, and in close proximity to the Ulundi Airport. Known for its abundance of diverse wildlife and its efforts to conserve the flora and fauna, the park is also the only park run by the state in KwaZulu-Natal where the big five game are present: the African elephant, African leopard, African lion, Cape buffalo, and the white/blick rhinoceros. The Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park also boasts of the largest population of white rhino in the world.
eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park - Also near the airport is the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park, situated on the banks of the White Umfolozi River, some 10km south of Ulundi. The park's 24,000-hectare area recaptures the cultural heritage of the Zulu people, as well as the final resting place of Zulu's greatest chiefs, such as Nkhosinkulu, Senzangakhona kaJama, and Dinizulu. The area is also home to some blue wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, several antelope species, and most notable of all, the black rhino.
Battlefields Route of KwaZulu Natal - The site where several battles that shaped South African and British history took place also has breath-taking landscapes of hills and rock formations. The Battlefields Routes offer several attractions, including Mtonjaneni Zulu Historical Museum, Baynesfield Museums, Ncome Zulu Cultural Museum, and the Ondini Cultural Museum and site of King Cetshwayo’s Royal Residence, as well as game parks and areas for observing birdlife.
Kwa Cheetah Breeding Project - Regarded as the most successful Cheetah breeding project in the region, Kwa Cheetah breeds the majestic felines to release them back in the African wilderness. Though born in captivity, the cubs are taught how to hunt in order to prepare them for the independent life in the wild. The organisation is not strictly exclusive for cheetahs; Kwa Cheetah also participates in the rescue and release of smaller cat species and other orphaned or injured animals. Visitors are welcome so many will be more aware and educated regarding the plight of the cheetahs, but the daily interaction is limited to one per day to avoid unnecessary stress on the cats. Visitation fees are used for the care and feeding of the animals.
