Discover Tenakee Springs
The Tenakee Seaplane Base is a state-owned public seaplane base located in Tenakee Springs, a city on Chichagof Island in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area of Alaska. It is categorised as a general aviation airport by the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011-2015, and has since had a little less than 700 enplanements each year (beginning in 2008). The scheduled airline service in the area is currently subsidised by the Essential Air Service Program through Alaska Seaplanes (also known as Alaska Seaplane Service). The said scheduled airline service runs a route between the Juneau International Airport and the Tenakee Seaplane Base.
What to see & do
The Tenakee Seaplane Base is located in Tenakee Springs, one of the cities in Chicagof Island. Tenakee Springs is a 19.1 square-mile area that is populated with no more than 200 residents, which includes their mayor and other local government officials.
Since the late 19th century when it served as a winter retreat for fishers and their vessels, Tenakee Springs has evolved into a relaxed village setting, bearing a small community of fishers as well. On the east side of Tenakee Inlet (land part), the community is basically a ferry dock, with row houses on pilings, and the hot springs – which is definitely the main attraction for tourists who dare venture into the cold state. Tenakee Springs also has alternative lifestyle centres on the free public bathhouse at the end of the ferry dock, where the principal spring is enclosed by a building.
Aside from the hot springs, travellers may also go on a hike through great hiking trails that lead out of Tenakee Springs. Hunting is also allowed, as well as fishing; just bring your own gear. Alternative and cheap activities also include kayaking, bird watching, whale watching, and such. If up for some higher level of adventure, go sailing and see the most extraordinary sights while afloat.
How to get around within Tenakee Springs
The best way to get around Tenakee Springs is to walk. There is no need for public transportation, so to speak - as the area is relatively small. Transport modes are only needed when transferring from the city to another commune, or leaving the city altogether; and it is usually by plane or by boat.
How to get there
To get to Tenakee Springs, travellers are advised to take flights from the Juneau International Airport and to fly directly to the Tenakee Springs Seaplane Base. The Essential Air Service provides subsidised flights through Alaska Seaplanes, a scheduled passenger service that brings passengers to various points in Alaska.
