The Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is a neat facility servicing the island of Langkawi. It is situated only about 15km from the town centre of Kuah, and 8km from the popular tourist beach of Pentai Cenang. You’ll find a few ATMs, a bank, public phones, and a number of restaurants. There are duty-free shops here, but the whole island is duty free, so you may spend more time shopping in town than in the airport.

Your options when it comes to transport in Langkawi are to rent a car, or hire a taxi. If you take a taxi to the beaches on the western side of the island, expect a cost of around 25MYR ($7.50) to Kuah, or 35MYR ($10.50) to the north of the island.

Things to do in Langkawi

Langkawi’s attractions are almost all exclusively natural, and taking advantage of its environmental attributes should be top of your list. Head to the glorious Kilim Geo Park, where you can tour the mangroves, the lagoons, the beaches, and the soaring limestone rocks that populate this area.

Nearby, you can visit the Galeria Perdana, a museum that houses bits and bobs collected and gifted to the 4^th Prime Minister of Malaysia. If looking at all the beautiful artefacts has you longing for your own piece of Langkawi to bring home with you, go down to the Langkawi Craft Complex where you can buy local and unique crafts.

For animal lovers, the Pulai Payar Marine Park can’t be beaten, primarily because it is located off shore and you can see species in their natural habitat. This place is excellent for snorkelling and for taking advantage of Langkawi’s extraordinary beaches.

Lastly, you should make time for the Sky Bridge and the Cable Car, which takes you to Mount Mat Cincang, and you can see out to the gorgeous Andaman Sea. From here, you will get a spectacular view any time of the day, but especially at sunset, so make sure you bring your camera.

Best time to visit Langkawi

·         January to March is the best time to visit this pretty island. The dry season is in full swing, and the temperature is at a steady 30°C.

·         April to August is the mid-season and can be decent in terms of price and weather, but you will be subject to the odd downpour.

·         September to October are best avoided, as this is the height of the wet season and you won’t get much sunbathing done in these months.

·         Almost all flights to Langkawi will be subject to a stop in Singapore (SIN), or Kuala Lumpur (KUL) if you are flying from Australia.
