Rio de Janeiro Galeao International Airport (GIG)

There are two airports servicing the city of Rio de Janeiro. The first is the Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), and the second is the larger Rio de Janiero Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), where most long-haul flights are directed. Most popularly known as the Rio Galeão Airport, this facility has comprehensive amenities, like ATMs, currency exchange counters, a variety of restaurants, duty-free shops, a post office, a beauty salon and free WiFi for up to 60 minutes.

Passengers have a choice of taking the BRT (a rapid bus service), city buses, or the Metro to travel the 20km into the centre of town. If you choose instead to take a taxi from outside the terminal to the downtown area, called ‘Centro’, or to a popular neighbourhood like Copacabana, expect the fare to be around 50-65 ($20-26).

There are several airlines that fly to Rio de Janeiro, and a few airline combinations you can take to reach this city. Typically, you should look at operators like LATAM Airlines Group, Aerolineas Argentinas, Air New Zealand, Emirates, Air Canada, American Airlines or British Airways.

Things to do in Rio de Janeiro

This UNESCO World Heritage listed city has no shortage of beauty, and to really get a sense of the scale and its blessed location, you must make your way to the summit of Corcovado. On this peak stands the art deco statue, Christ the Redeemer, an iconic symbol of Rio and an impressive 30 metres tall when you stand at its base. But don’t look up at it too long, because behind you is one of the most impressive panoramic views of the city, where you can see the bay, Sugarloaf Mountain, the glittering city skyline, and the lush greenery of the Tijuca National Park.

Back on the ground, there is plenty to see, from the happening beaches such as Ipanema, where the beautiful come to see and be seen, to the gorgeous and historical Copacabana, where you can dip into the turn of the century fort, and the Museum of the History of the Army, and then top of the day with a cocktail at the renowned hotel, the Copacabana Palace.

There are also some wonderful architectural features here in Rio, from the Baroque, and glittering São Francisco da Penitência, to the imposing Benedictine São Bento, fine examples of how Christianity and colonialism left its imprint on the country.

Best time to visit Rio de Janeiro

· Flying to Rio during their summer season is the best time to see this city. Between December and March the weather is sunny, but hot, hot, hot. The temperatures in December and January can rise to 40°C. However, in February the temperatures drop a little and the crowd swells to be in the city for the world famous Carnival.

· The spring months are a little humid as the temperature rises for summer, and there’s more chance of rain, but like autumn, the temperature stays steady at 26°C and is a perfect time for hiking. Though autumn is the better bet, as the days will average 26°C but there is less chance of rain.

· If you’re not keen on crowds, or on heat, then winter isn’t such a bad time to visit. The rainfall is minimal, and days can see highs of 24°C.

Arriving in Rio de Janeiro by plane

· Depending on which carrier you fly with, you can encounter either one layover, or several. Expect to see Santiago (SCL), Auckland (AKL), Sao Paolo (GRU), or Buenos Aires (EZE) on your itinerary.

· Brazilian Real (BRL).

Visa requirements

· You will need to apply for a visa ahead of time if you are an Australian national. Sometimes this can be waived for special events, such as the 2016 Olympics, but for the most part you will need to contact your nearest Brazilian Consulate or Embassy for instructions and visa application forms.
