Whale Cove Airport is the public airport located eight kilometres from Whale Cove, Nunavut, Canada. The airport is operated by the government of Nunavut. It resides at an elevation of 40 feet (12 metres) above mean sea level and has one runway designated 15/33, with gravel surface and a length of 3,937 feet (1,200 metres).

 

Whale Cove is a settlement situated 72 kilometres south of Rankin Inlet and 161 kilometres north of Arviat, in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada. The community is named Whale Cove due to the large number of beluga whales that assemble at the coast. These whales are hunted by the locals every fall and use the by-products for food and oil, as Whale Cove is a relatively traditional community; Inuits still hunt and fish, eat raw meat, and wear fur. They have been trading whale oil, baleen, furs, and leather with the Hudson's Bay Company since the mid-18th century, and their main diet consists of arctic fishes, seal, walrus, and beluga meat. Whale Cove is also part of the polar bear migration route.

 

Outdoor Activities - The lakes and rivers are crystal clean, making Whale Cove an excellent place to go fishing. There is an annual fishing derby for the largest lake trout during the spring. You can also witness large pods of beluga whales near the shores in the fall, as well as other animals such as seals, walrus, arctic hares, and polar bears. Fun contests to participate in include igloo building competitions and snowmobile races. Traditional Inuit games are held during the summer, including inuksuk building, tea and bannock making, and rabbit hunting.

 

Iqalugaarjuup Nunanga Territorial Park - The historic Iqalugaarjuup Nunanga Territorial Park is situated 80 kilometres from Whale Cove. The park was established to protect and preserve significant archaeological sites, in addition to conserving the habitat of the resident animals. The park was and remains to be an ideal spot for camping and fishing. A particular area of the park is marked as the archaeological section, is it contains several artefacts of the Pre-Dorset people dating back from 1000 BC, as well as the graves and food cache sites of the Thule people from 1200 AD.

 

Local Inuit generally travel by ski-doo or snowmobiles during the winter, or by boat in the summer, to travel between the hamlet of Whale Cove and Rankin Inlet. Travelling by dog sled is also a popular way to get around.
