It used to be the main airport in the Grande Comore, although it was closed down a few years back in favour of the new Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport. Both its ICAO and IATA identifiers were reclaimed and are available for use.

Moroni also has its fair share of shopping centres, hotels, museums, and a night club, which are quite new because of the recently concluded coup of 2003.
