Discover Moroni Iconi
Iconi Airport was an airport serving Moroni, the capital of the Comoros Islands. It was located on the western side of the island of Grand Comore, north of the town of Iconi. It used to be the main airport in the Grande Comore, although it was closed down a few years back in favour of the new Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport. Both its ICAO and IATA identifiers were reclaimed and are available for use.
The airport that replaced the Iconi Airport is called the Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport. The Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport is the international airport serving Moroni in Comoros, known as the main airport in the island of Grand Comore. It is the hub for local Comores Aviation, and is served by airlines including Air Austral, Air Madagascar, Air Tanzania, Ewa Air, Fly SAX, Kenya Airways, and Yemenia.
What to see & do
The old and defunct Iconi Airport was located in Moroni, the capital of the Comoros Islands. It is the largest city, federal capital, and seat of government of the Union of the Comoros, a sovereign archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. Moroni literally translates to “in the heart of fire” (Comorian), alluding somehow to the city's location at the foot of Mount Karthala. Moroni is the capital of the semi-autonomous island Grand Comore, with an estimated population of 41,557 residents. Beaches and white sand stretches are the main selling points of Moroni, offering great views of the beauty of the seas and the pristine clarity of the sand.
Apart from the physical seas surrounding the island and the capital, Moroni has created its own sea of culture that is made up of characterful landmarks and natural gems. The historical town centre, the Medina, contains a maze of narrow alleys and ancient buildings of Swahili period, albeit being poorly maintained. There are many mosques too, with the notable ones being called as the Badjanani Mosque pr Ancienne Mosquee de Vendredi. The said mosque is the oldest of its kind in the Medina. Moroni also has its fair share of shopping centres, hotels, museums, and a night club, which are quite new because of the recently concluded coup of 2003.
How to get around within Moroni
Main modes of transport in the region are private cars. Private cars come in handy especially when travelling within Moroni and to other places in Grand Comore. It is unknown if there are established public transport modes though, but roads are in tip-top shape.
How to get there
