What can you do in Havana?

The beautiful and romantic city of Havana feels completely out of time; its colourful streets are bright and cheerful despite the clear dilapidation that touches much of the city. Like a photograph plucked right out of the 1950s, Havana will make you feel nostalgic for days gone by. However, it won’t take you long to discover its real heart is made up of the sultry energy that pulses through it, and you, like many who have come before you, will be spellbound by this unique Caribbean city.

Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and most spend the majority of their time here. It is a mix of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, and wonderfully charming. Stroll to the Catedral de San Cristobal, and get a feel for the city in the plazas Vieja and Armas. Save a little extra time for Plaza de Armas, as you can visit the City Museum off that square, and it will give you an insight into Havana’s history. It’s also worth heading for the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales and the fortress Castillo de la Real Fuerza, both fascinating and historical buildings. If you are a history buff, and have plumbed most of Old Havana, then you must make sure you drop by the Plaza de la Revolucion, and the accompanying Museo de la Revolucion, which charts the famous movement led by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.

If you have a free afternoon, there isn’t a better way to spend it than to wander along the Malecon, a seafront esplanade where you can catch a little local flavour and watch the sun set. Or, for beach bums, a short drive from central Havana is the golden sands of Playas del Este, a gorgeous stretch of coastline that sits over miles. The most popular part is probably Santa Maria del Mar, where you can find hotels, restaurants and lots of bars, perfect for a little break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Havana.

When should you go?

The temperatures across the country are pretty consistent throughout the year—this is the Caribbean after all—so expect the mercury to sit between 20 and 35°C. However, the best time to travel to Havana is from November to April when it is the dry season in the country and you are more likely to get those beautiful azure skies this part of the world is known for.
