Reykjavík-Keflavík International Airport is an international airport deemed as the largest in Iceland that serves the greater Reykjavík Area as well as the country’s main hub for international transportation. The airport is located 3.1km west of Keflavik and 50km southwest of Reykjavík. Main carriers at the airport are Icelandair and WOW air, which makes the airport their main hub. Given that most domestic flights fly from Reykjavík Airport located 3km from the Reykjavík’s city centre, Reykjavík-Keflavík International Airport is close to becoming an exclusive international airport. The airport has two runways with asphalt surface, with the first runway tilting to the direction of 02/20, stretching 3,054 metres length or 10,020 feet, while the second runway is tilting to the direction of 11/29, stretching 3,065 metres length or 10,056 feet.
What to see & do
With its proximity to Keflavík, you can easily navigate around the town and head back to the airport in no time at all. One of the things to see in Keflavík is the whales in the harbour. The tours generally last for three hours that features dolphins, orca, minke, and humpback whales. If you got in here by August, chances are you will also bear witness to a festival of lights. You can also try to navigate the numerous walking paths that leads out of town, one of which is a stone path that can be found along the water, meandering several miles past seabirds to the lighthouse on the point. Keflavík is also fairly close to the Blue Lagoon, which also attracts a number of tourists. It also has one of a kind historical Viking museum, the Viking World.
You can also reach Reykjavík, located approximately 50km west of Keflavík. Despite it being a small city, Reykjavík has a big, vibrant music scene that hosts concerts most evenings in the city centre. You can also marvel at the city’s eclectic building architectures. Some notable buildings include the Alþingi, a small building made of hewn stone. You can also marvel at the Hallgrímskirkja Church with its Leif Ericsson statue in front, the Norse explorer was believed to have sailed to North America in the 10th century. If you want to while away time at an open area, you can simply head to the Tjörnin or The Pond, a small lake in the city centre wherein young and old feed the ducks. The Pond is surrounded by a park called Hljómskálagarðurinn or Music Pavilion Park. As a city with a vibrant cultural aura in the air, you should also not miss visiting its museum. To begin with, you should visit the Reykjavík City Museum, an open air museum that contains both the old farm as well as numerous buildings from central Reykjavík that were relocated to make way for construction, resulting to an array of old, interesting buildings.
How to get around within Reykjavík and Keflavík
From the Reykjavík-Keflavík International Airport, you can simply reach Reykjavík or Keflavík via Flybus or Gray Line Airport Express. The buses go to and from the Reykjavík bus terminal, which takes about 45 minutes. Reykjavík also has a public bus system called Strætó. Taxis in the city are metered.
