What to see & do

Known to be a wild, untamed and a harsh desert landscape, Makran is the place wherein Alexander the Great set foot upon his return from India, when he lost his thousands of army due to hunger and dehydration. Despite this historical occurrence, Makran’s coast at present time is unbelievably great for fishing, especially for shellfish. Much of the region is mountainous, surrounded by three main ranges: the Makran Coast Range, Central Makran Range, and Siahan Range.

Makran is also the region bordering the Arabian Sea. The name Makran derives from Maka, borne by an overlapping satrapy of the Achaemenid Empire. It became Makran as it is closely related to the ancient Avestan and Old Persian Languages, which use “an” and “ran” at the end of the plurals.

Traditionally, Makranis have now migrated for work especially to Abu Dhabi’s Oman and the rest of Arabia. Despite this occurrence, the local economy is being driven by the development of the new port at Gwadar. The cultivated areas of the Makran are sheltered between these barren ranges. However, lack of communications, massive distances and poor road conditions makes it difficult to go here.
