Discover Pechora

Pechora Airport is the airport serving the town of Pechora in the Komi Republic in Russia, 5km southwest of the city centre. Pechora Airport, not to be confused with the Pechora Kamenka air base, is a civilian airport intended for public use. The airport resides at an elevation of 197 feet / 60 metres above mean sea level, with one runway designated 16/34 with an asphalt surface.

Pechora was granted its town status in 1949. It can be found on the Pechora River, near the northern Ural Mountain range. It is one of the six cities of Komi Republic; the others are Inta, Ukhta, Usinsk, Vorkuta, and the capital Syktyvakar. The latter is technically the only city in the region that is qualified as a tourist destination, although Komi Republic as a whole has beautiful mountain and forest areas worth visiting.

What to see & do

Yugyd Va National Park - Located entirely within the Pechora River basin is the largest national park in Russia, as well as in all of Europe. It encompasses 18,917km2 of the Ural Mountains, on the territory of districts Vuktylsky, Intinsky, and Pechorsky. The park headquarters is located in Vuktyl town, and there are branch offices in Pechora and Inta. Majority of the park consists of the taiga boreal forest, the rest being mostly tundra and some meadows. Fauna present within the park include the mountain hare, reindeer, otter, wolf, flying squirrel, and bear. There are also about 180 bird species. Yugyd Va National Park was created by the Russian Government on April 1994 in an effort to protect the taiga forests, as well as encourage recreational use of it. Aside from wildlife viewing, one may go hiking, boating, skiing, and rafting in the park.

Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve - Though smaller than Yugyd Va National Park, covering only an area of 7,213km2, the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve is also a significant site in Komi Republic. In fact, it is the core of the Virgin Komi Forests, which are declared as a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reserve is divided into five natural regions by Russian geographer A.A. Korchagin. The regions are: the Pechora Lowlands, the piedmont (foothills) region, the Upper Ilych lowland, the Ural Mountains, and the valleys of Pechora and Ilych. The reserve is home to an abundant number of moose, squirrels, beavers, and pine martens, as well as some wolves, brown bears, and wolverines.

Mt. Narodnaya - Mount Narodnaya is the highest peak of the Ural Mountains, with an elevation of 1,894 metres. It is also the highest point in European Russia outside of the region of Caucasus. Some glaciers can be found on the mountain. Hiking can be done on the north-west slope.
