Discover Mus

The Province of Mus, located at the Easter Anatolian region, is one of the picturesque places to be in Turkey. Its natural beauty, formed by cultural sites and lakes, makes it an attractive place to be for tourists who want to explore more of this beautiful country in between Asia and Europe. Those visiting here will also find various districts in the area, each with their own range of attractions.

Mus, the third largest plain in Eastern Anatolia and the highest region in the country, has an economy based on agriculture and livestock, as well as a weaving trade. Travellers will also experience a typical continental climate, allowing tourists to stay relatively comfortable. Other than that, one can bask in the historical atmosphere of the place, especially in the town of Malazgirt, an important and famous name in Turkish history.

What to see & do

When exploring, one of the attractions to add to the list is the Kayalidere, an ancient city located inside the borders of the village, which was once a settlement of the Urartu civilisation. Excavations in 1965 revealed the ruins of the castle, temple, wine cellar, burial grounds, and other small structures. These large relics are mostly intact and were studied to be built in the reign of the Urartu kings in the Sarduri period (764 – 735 BCE). The temple also has a courtyard, with a stone floor and a bronze statue of a lion in a sitting position. These artefacts, dated to 17th century BCE, also features buttons, arrowheads, bronze pins, and arch pieces depicting a lion hunt.

From here, tourists can move to view several religious monuments such as the Ulu Mosque. Established in 979 CE at the centre of the Mus province, this site was constructed under the orders of Seyh Muhammed-i Magrubi. There is also the Haci Seref Mosque in Arslanli Inn, which was constructed in 1318 by Abdulhamit Han. One can then take note of Alaaddin Pasa Mosque and the Surp Garabet, a church that was used as a temple fire during its first construction period. It was, however, opened for Christian worship in the year 399 by the Sasani civilisation that reigned after the Romans. Although in ruins these days, the church still attracts various tourists after 1990. Those looking for other Christian places of worship, there is also the Meryem Ana Church. Its upper ceiling may have collapsed, but the church is still ready for visitors looking around.

Mausoleums make up another attraction in the province. One will find here various structures built for famous figures such as Kesik Bas and Ibrahim Samidi. From here, tourists who want to see more of the countryside can venture to Hacli Lake, located on the southeast of the Bulanik district. Its mostly muddy water, however, is still hospitable to a number of carp and other freshwater fish. Kaz Lake in the northeast section of the Aktuzia locality can also be seen here. Tourists out to see birds, on the other hand, can move to Bulanik Plain, where various species can be found flying out.
