Malta International Airport is a medium sized facility, but it features all the standard amenities, such as ATMs, free WiFi, a foreign exchange counter, a good selection of restaurants, and a decent duty-free area passengers can make use of.

Malta’s airport is about 9km from the main city of Valetta, and can be reached by shuttle, bus or taxi. Expect a taxi journey to come to about 10EUR ($15).

Why visit Malta?

Malta, is a charming island country that is nestled between the European continent and the African one. It has been a much sought after base for every major culture that ruled the Mediterranean Sea, and has seen its landscape made and remade, built and adjusted over the centuries to become a living monument of long-dead empires. Today, Malta still sought after, but today it is for its sapphire seas, its golden beaches and its enchanting towns.

Things to do in Malta

Malta is made up of three islands; Gozo, Comino and its namesake, Malta. Each has their own draws, but to truly get a feel for the Maltese way of life you must start your tour in Valletta, on Malta, and explore this beautiful capital.

See the extraordinary Grand Master’s Palace, and be awed by the 16^th century Saint John’s Co-Cathedral. Try to catch a show in the decorated Manoel Theatre, erected in the 1700s, or tour the Museum of Archeology to see just how far the island’s history goes (some 5000 years!). If you do drop by this museum, make sure you pair it with a visit to the Tarxien Temples, Neolithic structures that pre-date our historical records.

Once you’ve seen what Valetta has to offer, make time for Mdina, a medieval citadel that is gathered on a hilltop, and surrounded by greenery. Much of this town is ancient, and walking through its narrow streets will make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

If you can, you must spend a few days on Gozo Island, the beauty of the Maltese isles, boasting gorgeous beaches of every kind, from the dramatic rocky ones, to stretches of striking red sand. The waters here are warm and crystalline, and holiday goers from all over Europe fly to this island to relax under its sun.

On Comino, the beaches are similarly beautiful, but this island’s premier attraction is its stunning Blue Lagoon, a small beach connected to a sand bank where gentle, crystal clear waters lap the shore.

Best time to visit Malta

· If you are in Malta to take advantage of the swimming and sunbathing in the Mediterranean, then plan your trip between April and October. The sea will remain warm throughout these months, though the temperature will spike in high summer (July-August) and can reach up to 40°C. In general though, you’ll find that the daily averages are between 23-31°C.

· If you fly to Malta, be prepared for a couple of stopovers on the way. Generally via Singapore (SIN), Frankfurt (FRA), Hong Kong (HKG) and Istanbul (IST).

· Currently, Australians do not need a visa to enter Malta, but you should check with your local consulate before you fly to ensure that these are still the current rules.
