Kismayo Airport, otherwise known as Kisimayu Airport, is an airport serving the city Kismayo, the capital of Somalia's autonomous Lower Juba region. The aviation facility is located in southern Jubaland, some 10 km away from the city centre, and is owned by the Somali Civil Aviation Authority. It resides at an elevation of 49 feet / 15 metres above mean sea level and has an asphalt runway designated 05/23 at the length of 12,100 feet / 3,688 metres. The airport was formerly a training base for the Somali Air Force, but was closed down due to the outbreak of the civil war. The facility was damaged at the time. It underwent renovations and the Islamic Courts Union reopened the airport in October 2008. It wasn't until August 2013 that the airport was officially brought under the Jube Interim Administration.

What to see & do

Laas Geel - Perhaps the most popular and best known landmark in Somalia, Laas Geel is a complex of caves and rock shelters found in Somaliland. It contains hundreds of ancient Neolithic paintings, and the rock art are impressively well-preserved. Visitors can tour the site provided they are accompanied by a guide.

Kismayo National Park - Kismayo's national park contains endemic animals of the East African region, including the Somali sheep and the Somali wild ass. There are wildlife safari tours available to allow guest to observe big African game, including lions, zebras, leopards, and antelopes.

Naasa Hablood - The famous twin hills in the Wooqooyi Galbeed province in Somaliland is called the Naasa Hablood. It is also known as Virgin's Breast Mountain due to its shape from the side view. In fact, Naasa Hablood actually literally translates to 'girl's breasts'.

How to get around within Kismayo

Kismayo is connected to other major areas in Somali through three main thoroughfares. The port city is connected to the capital Mogadishu via a paved 528km freeway. Highway 3 covers 600km of the Juba Valley and, starting from Beled Hawo, passes by Garbaharey, Bardera, Buale, and Kismayo. Third is a highway that extends northwest from Kismayo to Afmadow.

How to get there

Kismayo Airport is served by the airline Garoonka Airlines, which operates flights to and from Aden Adde International Airport (formerly Mogadishu Airport) in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. However, Kismayo is currently declared a dangerous place and is by no means a tourist destination.
