Discover Nanortalik

Nanortalik Heliport is a public heliport located in the eastern part of Nanortalik, a town in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland. The airport is run by Mittarfeqarfiit, while Air Greenland operates government contract flights – which are mostly cargo – to villages in the Nanortalik region. While these are not featured in the timetable, they can be pre-booked, with approximate departure times specified during booking and the settlement service optimised on the fly depending on local demand for a given day.

What to see & do

Nanortalik, formerly Nennortalik, is a town in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland. It is the southernmost town in the country with a population of more than 1,000, making it the 10th-largest town in Greenland. Its name means “Place of Polar Bears” or “Place Where the Polar Bears Go.” The town is unlike any other in Greenland, with its landscape covered in deep fjords, small woodlands and prairies, and rugged mountainside cliffs. Its main industries are crab fishing, hooded seal and seabird hunting, tourism, and local administration. Many Greenlanders hunt hooded seals among the outer islands during spring, with the ancient culture of the Inuit practicing this hunting tradition every year. Gold mining in Kirkespir Valley has also been a great source of income since 2004.

Nanortalik is known for its stunning mountain peaks and vertical walls in Tasermiut Fjord. Mountain climbers frequent Ketil Mountain and Ulamertorsuaq, along with other mountains considered as the toughest routes in the Alps. Although the country is almost completely without trees, there’s one forest in Qinngua valley, which is located approximately 40km from town. The forest is home to tall Willow and Birch trees, along with about 300 species of other plants, in addition to many lichens. Due to native hunters, Nanortalik’s wildlife is sparse, with ravens, seagulls, and snow buntings being some of the few abundant larger bird species. Naturally, there are polar bears that inhabit Nanortalik, as well as whales – especially minke whales – that migrate to the area during spring and late summer. Occasionally, humpback whales and orcas can also be seen. Seals – including ringed seal, hooded seal, and harp seal – are common in the surrounding fjords. Birdlife in Nanortalik includes raven, ptarmigan, Glaucous Gull, Iceland Gull, snow bunting, guillemot, eider, king eider, gyrfalcon, white-tailed eagle, redpoll, and red-necked phalarope, among others.

The town has one museum, Nanortalik Museum, which features exhibits spread across many buildings, and has summer tents, kayaks, and the oldest women’s boat ever found.
