Why visit Buenos Aires?

The romantic and sultry city of Buenos Aires has seduced more than its fair share of travellers. The city is over 400 years old, and is the political, and economic powerhouse of the country. Over its tenure as the premier city in Argentina, is has cultivated a reputation for mindblowing cuisine, a rollicking nightlife, a steamy dance scene, and an inclusive culture, all mixed with a cornucopia of European architecture, and a dollop of Latin charm. Things to do in Buenos Aires

Stroll in the centre of town, frequently compared to Paris, thanks to its 19^th century French inspired architecture seen in the City Government Building, and the San Martin Palace. A lot of the central part of the city has been pedestrianised, and visitors can go on walking tours of important landmarks, many of which really embrace the best of Argentine culture, such as the National Tango Academy, the renowned Café Tortoni—the oldest café in the city—and the Presidential Palace from which the popular and beautiful Eva Peron would greet the crowds. Nearby, there is also the spectacular Metropolitan Cathedral, just off the Plaza de Mayo, with a striking neoclassical façade.

For a look at the history of this city in detail, it’s worth going to the San Telmo and the National Historical Museum, which has exhibitions on the nation’s past, and displays on the country’s most famous statesmen and women. This city is also renowned for its art museums, and in particular the National Museum of Fine Arts, whose collection runs from the Middle Ages and into the 20^th century.

If you are in the city on a Sunday, and want to embrace an Argentine tradition, make sure you go to Plaza Dorrego. A prominent public square that has lots of vendors selling all kinds of antiques, and you can pick up some real gems. Even if you don’t find anything you like, you can sit outdoors, enjoy a strong coffee, and watch the talented tango dancers perform in the square.

Best time to visit Buenos Aires

· Autumn (April-June) and the spring going into early summer (September-December) are the best times of year to go. The crowds aren’t at their zenith, and neither is the mercury. Daily averages swing between 15-28°C.

· Deep summer sees days hovering at 30°C, and a ton of people flood the city, but there are lots of free events on in the city.

· Winter is mild, and if you’re looking to have the city to yourself, this is the season to come. Expect temperatures between 7 and 14°C.

· For South America, Australians should start looking at flights roughly seven months before their departure date to get the best deal on flights.

Arriving in Buenos Aires by plane

· Two airports service Buenos Aires, the domestic hub of Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP), and the international one, the Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) which you will be directed to when flying from Australia. Airlines that fly into these airports are LATAM Airlines Group, Qantas, Air New Zealand, British Airways, Emirates, Delta, Etihad Airways, Korean Air, and Air Canada.

· Ministro Pistarini Airport is only 22km from the downtown area, and Aeroparque Jorge Newbery is 7km away. There are foreign exchange counters, ATMs, phones, free WiFi, duty-free shops, as well as a good range of restaurants in each facility.

· Flights typically stopover in Auckland (AKL) and Santiago (SCL).

Visa requirements

· Australians will not need a visa for entering Argentina, but they are charged a fee of 100USD ($131) upon arrival for entry. Please see the smart traveller website for more details.

Transportation to city centre

· A taxi into downtown should come to 520ARS ($45) from EZE Airport, from AEP there are taxis that leave outside the airports but these can cost a fortune because of price gouging, so speaking with the private car companies within the terminal building may secure you a better deal.

· Arrange an airport transfer with Skyscanner, or take a bus or shuttle from the airport into town.

Where to stay in Buenos Aires

· Microcentro is full of hotels of all price ranges, and perfect for shopaholics, because of all the shops, and anyone who loves theatre, as there are lots of them in this part of town.

· Tribulanes is right next to Microcentro, but a lot quieter, and you can find hotels for lower prices.

· Congreso is a lovely historic neighbourhood that is great for access to many of the city’s loveliest buildings, but can also be a little dead at night.

Useful tips before you go

· Tipping 10-15% is standard in Buenos Aires restaurants.

· If you are invited to a party, make sure you arrive 60 minutes late, as turning up on time is considered to be a faux pas.
