Once a private game reserve of the Zambia’s President, the Lower Zambezi National Park first opened its doors to the public in 1983, when it was declared a national park. The park’s wild beauty, spanning a little more than 4,000 kilometres, is a sight to behold. Located along the north western bank of the Zambezi River, you can cross boundaries with the nearby Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park and let your wild spirit, together with other wild animals, roam wild and free. Underdeveloped, but not underappreciated, Lower Zambezi National Park, a wilderness state, is a beauty of its own.
What to see & do
Expect lots of walking and sightseeing for maximum wildlife exposure, or choose to ride a four-wheel drive vehicle, which is practically available in all camping sites. To maximize your safari experience, best if you will head to Lower Zambezi National Park on dry season, wherein most animals head towards the river. Even if the park is open year-round, the place is not accessible during rainy season. Take also into consideration that most lodges are closed from mid- December until end of February.
Begin your adventure at Chongwe Gate, located at the south western section of the park. The easiest to access, offering the most scenic views, many adventurers agree that this is one of the excellent spots to view wildlife. On the other side, an escarpment keeps the animals from straying away from the park. From the Zambezi Escarpment all the way to the river, Miombo trees occupy the elevated, hilly land while on the other lower side, Mopane trees dominate the area. The park is also home to several small rivers that flow freely in the park and make up a beautiful flood plain, interspersed with acacia and wintherthorn trees. Let its course run on its own while going with the flow aboard a boat ride, practically available at every camp site and lodges, and be awed with a majestic view of wildlife. Restore your faith in humanity when you come into terms with the efforts of Conservation Lower Zambezi to protect elephants against poaching.
Go deeper into the park and you will find that the place is becoming more remote and wilder at the same time. Watch out for the enormous Elephant species at the river’s edge, living harmoniously with the buffalo, waterbuck, and even crocodiles. Lower Zambezi National Park is also notable for its large herds of impala, as well as zebra, wildebeest, kudu, and eland, among others. Do watch out for major predators: lion, leopard, and hyena, and watch out for their level-playing game tactics in the wild. If you are lucky, you might get a chance to see a wild dog, which comes out rarely.
Wildlife doesn’t only cover land and water animals, but extends to the sky, wherein winged species take flight. A number of eagle, heron, bee-eater, and malachite, among others, are a common sight. Meanwhile, back into the river, egrets, storks, fish eaters, and darters can be seen perched in surrounding trees, overlooking the water. Watch out for uncommon sightings such as spoonbills, African skimmers, and ospreys, which are truly a delight to see.
