Discover Oksibil

Oksibil Airport is the airport that serves Oksibil, a district and the capital of Pegunungan Bintang Regency in Indonesia. It can be found on the map using the coordinates 4°54'22"S 140°37'44"E (-5.0910602 latitude, 140.6100006 longitude). There’s very little information about the airport itself and its services and facilities. It has an IATA code of “OKL” and an ICAO code of “WAJO”, and possibly handles flights to and from Sentani and Jayapura in Papua, Indonesia, operated by Illinois Airways and Trigana Air Service.

What to see & do

Oksibil is a remote village with about 2,000 inhabitants. It lies approximately 1,400 metres above sea level and can only be accessible by air transport. It is an administrative division of Papua, the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia, which lies in West Papua region, comprising the Indonesian, western half of the island of New Guinea and nearby islands. It has a total area of 15,682.00 square kilometres. The province, whose capital is Jayapura, is bordered by the nation of Papua New Guinea to the east, and by West Papua province to the west. It is home to several ethnic groups, including Amungme, Asmat, Bauzi, Dani, Kamoro, Kombai, Korowai, Mee, Sentani, Yali, and Yei. Its economy thrives from the reported 42 million hectares of forests, which are estimated to be valued at Rp.700 trillion ($78 billion), which can produce over 500 million cubic metres of logs annually. In addition, Grasberg Mine, the world's largest gold mine and third largest copper mine, can be found in the highlands near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua.

As the world’s largest and highest tropical island, Papua is home to some of the richest biodiversities in the world. There are many known forest fauna in Papua, such as marsupials, the endangered Long-beaked Echidna, bird species, the world’s longest lizards (Papua monitor), and the world’s largest butterflies. A UNESCO World Heritage Site is also located here, which is the Lorentz National Park, the largest protected area in the Asia Pacific region. It extends from Papua’s southwest coast to the central mountains. Another protected area within the province is the Wasur National Park. Other notable destinations in Papua also include Baliem Valley in Wamena, home to the popular penis-sheathed Dani warriors; and Raja Ampat, home to the world’s largest reefs.

How to get around within Oksibil

The main cities in the province of Papua in Indonesia are not connected by road; therefore, the only practical means of transport for long distances is via air travel. Boat charter for river travel is also available, but rather expensive.

How to get there

As mentioned, Oksibil can only be accessed by air transport. However, if one chooses not to directly go to Oksibil right away, getting into the province of Papua is possible by plane – the preferred option by nearly all travellers, via its main gateways: Biak, Manokwari, and Jayapura; by boat from Pelni; and by land, via the only border crossing between Papua and Papua New Guinea on the north coast between Jayapura and Vanimo. This is by private or hired vehicles only.
