Monrovia is the capital of, largest in, and most populous city in Liberia. Liberia is a country in West Africa, located on the Atlantic Coast at Cape Mesurado. The city is an easy image of a tropical capital, with the high sun on the sea and palm tree-lined streets. The city's population amount to approximately 971,000 as of the 2008 census. Monrovia is also the cultural, political and financial centre of the country. Since its founding in 1822, Monrovia has become the first permanent Black American settlement in West Africa. The city was named after the U.S. President James Monroe, who was a prominent supporter of Liberia's colonization. This made the city one of the only two national capitals that are named after a U.S. President, alongside Washington D.C. Tourists can visit Monrovia all year-round, as it is blessed with a tropical monsoon climate – plenty of sun to explore the city and make the most of your stay. A warning though, in March 2014, Liberia has been listed to have an Ebola outbreak – an often fatal and widely untreatable virus that spreads through direct contact with blood or other fluid secretions from an infected person.

What to see & do

Through years and by the command of modernization, Monrovia has also upgraded itself to becoming an interesting tourist destination. The city offers experiences that are uniquely Liberian, uniquely Monrovian. The Waterside Market is as chaotic as it is colourful, offering almost everything, packed and with a price tag. Take yourself to a walk along the stretch of the market and be entertained with the wide variation of items for sale. Bring the most unique item as a souvenir and your visit will definitely be memorable. Take a day tour and learn the country's history by visiting the National Museum of Liberia. An interesting place to visit in Monrovia – especially when you're traveling with kids – would be the Monkey Island. Actually, the island consists of six different islands that are home to six different breeds of chimpanzees. Visitors can feed the chimps by riding along with the caretakers. Watching these animals in their natural habitat and learning how they go about their lives will be a great experience for you, as well as for the little ones.

How to get around

Getting around the city can be done mainly by taxi. It would be wise for tourists to be wary of robberies and pickpocketing as rumours circulate about such incidents. When hailing taxis in Monrovia, it's best to hire one just for yourself rather than sharing it with a stranger in hopes of a cheaper fare price.

How to get there

Monrovia is accessible by plane through numerous connecting flights from nearby continents and more popular African countries. Brussels Airline offers direct flights to Monrovia with no stops in Accra, Ghana. Connecting flights to and from Manrovia are aplenty. Royal Air Maroc connects the city to Casablanca, Europe, and North America, as well as to Nigeria with Belleview and Virgin Nigeria, to the Nairobi hub of Kenya Airways, and to the Addis Abbaba hub of Ethiopian Airlines. The last two airlines also offer excellent connections to other African and Middle Eastern countries and destinations. Although there are yet to have daily flights to Monrovia from any of these airlines, services are becoming more and more regular.
