Why visit Belfast, Ireland
No visit to the “Emerald Isle” is complete without adding Belfast to your itinerary. The city is Northern Ireland’s vibrant capital, and sits at the mouth of the River Lough.
A fun item of note about Belfast is that it is believed that the giant featured in the novel Gulliver’s Travels was thought up by the author, Jonathan Swift, as he observed Cave Hill (a prominent natural landmark).
Things to do in Belfast
Your days will be filled during any trip to Belfast. For starters, make sure you visit the Ulster Museum; Cave Hill; Titanic Belfast (which charts the history of Belfast and the creation of the infamous ocean liner); Belfast Castle; the Grand Opera House (a restored Victorian theatre and music venue); the Botanic Gardens; and City Hall (there is a free tour available here).
While you’re in Belfast you can also see some of the many colourful political murals painted around the city; check out a variety of Victorian architecture; and enjoy the city’s great food, bar and music scene.

Where to stay in Belfast
During a stay in Belfast you may like to book accommodation in one of the four main quarters in the city. The Cathedral Quarter is named after St. Anne’s Cathedral, and is the spot to admire architecture or visit trendy restaurants, cosy pubs, and arts and crafts centres. The Titanic Quarter is the redeveloped entertainment and historic area where you’ll find about the city and ocean liner’s history, as well as enjoy a mix of old and new. In the Gaeltacht Quarter, Belfast’s centre for Irish language, you can learn about the culture, tour famous cemeteries, and check out the city’s only protected bogland, The Bog Meadows Nature Reserve. Queen’s Quarter is the leafy area of the city around Queen’s University. Here you’ll also find the Ulster Museum, the Botanic Gardens, and an eclectic range of shops, cafes, bars and galleries.
