Stay somewhere else

In thirty years travelling the Philippines this is up there with my most disappointing experiences.
If you get no further with this review then just follow this advice: avoid this place like the plague and stay instead at either 7AR resort or Sabines - both a few metres away and both with much better service, food and accommodation for less money. 7AR also has beachfront access and views which this place does not.
I always like to start with the good stuff, so this bit will be brief! The staff, especially Lino (the main person at the desk), were pleasant and tried their best.
The bed was comfortable and the aircon was cold enough.
The toilet flushed.
The most powerful jacuzzi pool in history
That’s it for the good stuff!
Ok, strap in for the list of what needs to be fixed! In chronological order over our stay:
1. Unfortunately the staff have zero decision making power and even less managerial support. In four days at the “resort” we saw no manager and no owners. But every time we needed to ask for something that required a decision, poor Lino had to call them. I never understand why anyone would have a hotel and then not even attempt to manage it with some degree of professionalism?
2. No record of our reservation made through booking.com, and some grumbling about the “promotional rate” we had received (and which they had presumably offered?)
3. no flexibility on early check in despite the hotel being totally empty. I guess that’s their prerogative to be fair, but almost every place I stay will offer this as a service to guests since it has no additional cost to the hotel. In the end we paid extra to be able to check in a bit early.
4. no restaurant facility or food in the hotel. What kind of hotel has no food available? Apart from the service it provides the guests it is one of the most profitable areas of hotel operations when done right.
5. No ice available in the hotel. We had to order and pay for it from outside. Seriously? A hotel with no freezer? Maybe that’s related to the lack of a kitchen?
6. Breakfast has to be ordered in advance and, despite there being a restaurant area, is served in heaps of plastic and styrofoam in the room. Of course, this meant it was all cooked in advance and served cold. Gelatinous cold egg, rice and corned beef. yuk. Hilariously the coffee that was part of the breakfast was poured into a teacup at the door of the room from a flask! One cup only - served to you standing at the door if your room. We ordered breakfast for 8:45am, so it was pretty annoying to be rudely awoken with the door banging at 7:40am. Rather than eat in the room we moved to the tables in the dining area. But they only had 3 forks and two spoons by way of cutlery so the four of us had to take turns or use the plastic cutlery that came with all the other single use trash. And all this for P250 per person, around 20% more than the going rate elsewhere for a freshly cooked meal. Needless to say we went out for breakfast the other days.
7. No drinking water available in the hotel. They gave us two 250ml bottles in the room on the first day (not replenished) but no service water available. Instead you have to buy water at a 100% mark up on local prices.
8. No hot water in the shower
9. Shower curtain not fixed in place and kept falling down
10. Sink tap handle fell off
11. Aircon spilling water onto the floor as no proper exhaust tubing. This was a slip hazard the whole time and also meant the room floor became quite dirty.
12. Rooms not serviced or cleaned at all during our 4 day stay.
13. Mattress covered in plastic, so at night you are basically sleeping in a pool of sweat. Honestly, if they are worried about the mattresses then at least put a couple of sheets or a textile mattress protector on top of the plastic rather than just one.
14. Unable / unwilling to arrange basic trips or excursions to tourist spots. Again, a wasted revenue opportunity as well as an easy and zero-cost service to offer guests.
15. Upon check out they refused to let us pay the breakfast rate cited in our reservation and charged us instead nearly 40% more. Complained again at the “promo rate” that had been offered. Interestingly the “promo rate” was still about 10% higher than those offered by 7AR Resort or Sabine’s resort (both nearby), so not really much of a “promo” in the first place!
16. Tried to charge a 5% surcharge for payment via credit card, which is way over what Visa charges merchants. Luckily we had enough cash available.
17. Swimming pool / jacuzzi water turned out to be filthy and covered in scum. Yuk!!!
18. Could not arrange airport transfer as promised. We took some trikes instead. Sort of summed up a hugely underwhelming stay.
If you still choose to stay here after reading this, I can provide details of the local masochist society branch in Masbate. Or you may opt to have one of the rodeo bulls trample on your nether regions.
