The adventurous mate

Take that adrenaline junkie best bud of yours to Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world! Nothing could solidify your mateship like leaping from a bridge together, heading to the slopes or plunging down some white-water rapids side-by-side.

If you don’t fancy the trans-Tasman flight, how about canyoning in the Blue Mountains, scuba diving in Cairns or surfing in Newcastle?

The wine-loving mate

Did you know that wine-lovers’ paradise actually exists? It lies just off Auckland and is an idyllic island of green rolling hills surrounded by pristine beaches and dotted all over with over 20 wineries.

The name of this magical place? Waiheke Island. It’s only a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland and is the most magical day-trip you can have with your wine-loving bestie.

Incredible wine is also found in Australia – with regions around Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley, Margaret River and Yarra Valley the start of a great list if you want to tour the domestic scene.

The city-loving mate

Itching to discover a new city with your bestie? Why wouldn’t you be? What could be better than hopping on a plane to a city you’ve never visited, waking up to a new skyline and discovering all the nooks and crannies of a new place.

Whether it’s a local spot like Melbourne or Sydney, a trip to Southeast Asia to see Bangkok or Singapore or a flight to Seoul or Tokyo in Far East Asia, there are plenty of options available. If you want to book by budget or deals, search Skyscanner for flights to ‘everywhere’ to make a better-informed decision.

The selfie-taking mate

What better way to celebrate your mateship than with a fresh batch of high-quality selfies? Expand your repertoire with a trip to a picturesque locale worthy of your photogenic best friend – hightail it to one of Australia’s favourite selfie spots and get snapping.

Uluru? Sydney Opera House? The 12 Apostles? There’s plenty of options to spice up your Instagram feed.

The foodie mate

The fastest way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. Treat them to a culinary experience that says, ‘I love you, but just as a friend’ and earn yourself a few brownie points, figuratively and literally.

How about fresh mango at Darwin’s Mindil Beach Markets? Pad See Ew on Koh Samui? Or maybe the incredible curries of India?

The travel-mad mate

You’ve got some treasured memories of your best mate, isn’t it time to make some more? The only thing better than travelling to new places is doing it with your bestie by your side.

Finding a new country to visit can be tricky, but an off-the-beaten-path location like Kiribati, East Timor or Myanmar all not too far away, you might be able to get them a brand new stamp for your passport.

The cultural mate

Your bestie is a sophisticated person, show them what they mean to you with a trip to a cultural capital. A theatrical treat or a day at the museum is just the ticket to make your mate feel special.

Not sure where to go? Look at the schedules for London’s West End, New York’s Broadway or Melbourne’s many theatres and venues to see what tickles your fancy.

The musical mate

When was the last time you and your best mate went to a concert together? Time to get the old team back together and hit up that band you’ve been dying to see.

While you might be able to see them nearby, it might also be an excuse to take a trip to one of the world’s iconic music venues. Sydney’s Opera House is obviously on the list, but you might also want to consider a trip to LA for the Hollywood Bowl or Glasgow for the Barrowlands.

The I-need-a-break mate

Does your best mate need a little TLC? Take them to a spa hotel and let them indulge in some serious relaxation. A facial, a massage, a break away with their best mate and soon enough they’ll be back to their best selves again.

One of the biggest spiritual centres can be found in Ubud, Bali, where you can detox, sign up to yoga retreats or make use of the cheap massage service throughout your stay.

The nature-loving mate

Get away from it all and take your best mate back to the wild. Cradle Mountain? The Daintree? Kakadu? It doesn’t matter where. Go camping, find a new diving spot, go hiking somewhere they’ve never been and get back to basics: you, your best mate and nature. Perfect.
