It’s been a decade since Qatar Airways first launched in Australia and we’ve seen a steady rise in flights from the world’s top-rated airline since then.
To celebrate this landmark, Qatar Airways is holding an anniversary sale. Find out how you can join the celebrations and enjoy incredible offers to Europe and how a top-quality flight experience enhances your holiday.
To complement these offers, we’ve also highlighted some of the milestones throughout the airline’s journey in Australia.
Qatar Airways’ first flight in Australia
Qatar Airways’ first flight from Australia was in 2009, from Melbourne on 6 December.
Although this was the first Australian city on the network map, it was Qatar Airways’ 85th destination worldwide.
That flight was made with a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. To begin with, there were only three flights a week, but this quickly increased to daily flights just a month after they launched.
Qatar Airways’ growth in Australia
Qatar Airways now flies from five cities in Australia. After setting up base in Melbourne, the airline spread from coast to coast across the country.
The second city to receive Qatar Airways flights was Perth, which currently has daily flight options. The first Perth flight left on 3 July 2012.
After Perth came Sydney, with its inaugural Qatar Airways flight on 3 March 2016. Sydney now has 14 weekly flights to Doha.
A couple of months later, Adelaide was the next city to launch. The South Australian capital currently has daily flights.
And last, but not least, was Canberra. The Australian capital launched its inaugural flight on 12 February 2018. There are now seven a week — these go through Sydney on their way out of Australia.
All these flights from all these cities have helped more than 5 million passengers from Australia enjoy the delights of Doha, Europe and the rest of the world.
Qatar Airways success in the past decade
It’s not just the frequency of flights, number of destinations and the size of the fleet that’s showing the success of Qatar Airways, it’s the accolades they’re picking up along the way.
From 2010-2019, Qatar Airways has been named in the top three for Skytrax’s Airline of the Year award. Of those years, it came out on top five times (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019) – more than any other carrier.
Celebrating 10 years of growth
This growth in Australia was mirrored with growth for Qatar Airways elsewhere in the world. In 2009, the airline flew to 85 cities worldwide. Today, that number is more than 160.
To celebrate, Qatar Airways is featuring anniversary offers throughout December that could see you take advantage of incredible deals to London, Paris, Barcelona and much of the rest of Europe.
