Which countries do Australians need visas for?

With an Australian passport, you’re in the lucky position that much of the world is open to you. Simply hop on a plane and you’ll be given a visa on arrival.

There are some exceptions to this, which you can find out more about in our Global Visa Guide, but it’s good to know that there are currently 27 countries that require you to apply for a visa in advance. The most commonly visited of these by Australians are:

  • Brazil
  • China
  • India
  • Russia
  • Vietnam

As visa requirements are constantly changing – for example, many countries now offer e-visas for Australian travellers – it’s recommended that you check visa requirements on Smart Traveller before you book your flights.

Applying for a visa for Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Australia and it comes to a shock to many travellers that they need to apply for a visa to go there. This is perhaps because many of the neighbouring countries – like Cambodia, Laos and Thailand – offer a visa on arrival and we expect the same in Vietnam.

However, this isn’t the case and you’ll need to apply for a Vietnam visa before you travel. To be on the safe side you might want to wait for approval before booking your flights.
