Nice and peaceful place to spend a few days. Walking is the best option to take if you want to really know this town.

Only a quick ferry ride away from Buenos Aires, this charming town is a perfect day trip. The center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can go up the lighthouse for great views. There are also some lovely shops and restaurants. My personal highlight of the day was sitting on the pier, drinking yerba mate with some friendly locals, watching the sun set. Colonia is a quiet respite, but also a little adventure all on its own.

Colonia del Sacramento is a town in the southwestern part of Uruguay. It was founded by the Portugese in the late seventeenth century, and several years later, the ever competitive Spanish, having colonized Argentina to the south, sent an exploration group to a nearby area and founded the city of Montevideo. Eventually, the Spanish would win out, and Uruguay would become a Spanish colony.

Charming coastal village with a lot of interesting history and well-preserved colonial architecture. A perfect outing from Buenos Aires or a destination in and of itself within Uruguay!
