One of my favorite cities in Turkey... the 3rd largest city, I was surprised I hadn't heard of it. It has some great waterfront areas to hang out. The "downtown"/ financial part has tons of coffee places where you can sit and enjoy a coffee and enjoy watching the ocean
Gayle and I actually didn't see much of Izmir (formally the Greek City of Smyrna), other than the City as we came in and left via our cruise ship or on the bus to and from Ephesus. Our nexus was the port and with probably a lot of lost opportunity to explore this interesting multi-cultural area more thoroughly.
This city has three faces. Business side, a bit slumy side and the beautiful beautiful seafront side. Anyways its worth a visit just for the beautiful seafront side :)
Big city that is little known outside but in turkey it is well known for its music, beaches and a very liberal atmosphere.
