I lived here for about five months. Been awhile since I have been there, but I remember it as a quaint, if slightly run-down town. Absolutely beautiful scenery, friendly locals, etc. Downtown was not much, and oddly not much of a waterfront to speak of. Check out Wild West Adventures and say "Hi" to Paul.

We spent four weeks in New Zealand, an everyday was fabulous but we really loved Greymouth. First, we stayed in a cheerful hostel with a great travelers vibe: http://www.globalvillagebackpackers.co.nz/ Even though it rained the entire time we were in Greymouth, we still had a blast. Check out Monteiths Brewery tour, and make sure to try their Radler (yummy!!). http://www.monteiths.co.nz/ Also, don't miss the Pancake Rocks http://www.punakaiki.co.nz/ If you're lucky you'll have a penguin sighting on the way. Prepare for wet weather, but that's half the fun of the Pancake Rocks anyway.
